dc.description.abstractAttributed to Joel Barlow. Cf. Zunder, T.A. The early days of Joel Barlow, a Connecticut wit, 1934, p. 176-177, 285. Not dated, but the line, "And bring ... the first happy New-Year ..." suggests that this was the first carriers' address issued by the American Mercury. The American Mercury was established in 1784 by Joel Barlow and Elisha Babcock the verses were presumably printed late in 1784 for distribution on or about Jan. 1, 1785. Printed area measures 19.9 x 8.4 cm.
