Description
"Eyn Sermon von dem Elichen stand" is Luther’s first public statement on marriage. Shortly after his sermon from the 16th January 1519, Wolfgang Stöckel published an unauthorized transcript in Leipzig. Luther criticized this transcript and published a revised version himself in the same year through Johann Rhau-Grunenberg in Wittenberg. Both versions became very popular. There have been 14 editions of the revised version and even one translation into Danish. The title page features a woodcut showing Maria with Jesus in her arms. The frame of the title page is printed with recycled woodcuts with different patterns. This points to the hasty production of the print in general.
This transcription has been created on the basis of a digitization from the Staatsbibliothek Berlin under a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 International license. A physical copy of this print is available in the Weston Library under the signature Tr. Luth. 86 (12).
